Model 60 vs Colt Cobra

Also interested in the Model 60 Performance Center

For a range or home defense piece a K frame (mid size) with a 4 or 6” barrel will be a lot easier to shoot than a J Frame. J is great for concealed carry but a larger piece with a longer barrel will be a lot more comfortable to shoot and will enable you to master the weapon a lot quicker. I’ve got a few J’s that are snubs and a model 60 Performance center with a 3”. That latter is the easiest to shoot accurately, but it pales compared to a larger piece with a longer sight radius.

Well I am thinking of getting a 686 SSR for my serious home defense gun and overall easier to shoot gun whether it is 357, 38, or +P. But also wanted a smaller lighter steel frame revolver that could be used for conceal carry on my person or in my backpack if need be using 38 or +P. I was looking at the Model 60 Performance Center as well. I would definitely like to see that one too. Can you say more about it?

I have a 60-9 2” with big rubber grips… full-on 357’s are too
much for me, mid-level ok, 38 +P no problem. Works ok pocket, IWB, OWB.

As a hiking gun I’d be tempted to go for a 3”, just to make 357’s work a little better (more important against critters).

I don’t have a 60 but do have a two steel J frame 38’s and a model 37 alloy 38 as well as a new Cobra 2” and a King Cobra 3”. I also have 2 Smith K frame 38 2” and a model 66 2.5”. Hands down if size isn’t a factor it’s the Cobra or model 10 Smith. Between the colt and the Smith it’s pretty much a tossup. I would go stainless over blue but shooting wise they’re equal. As to the trigger, no issues with the Colt trigger. The Colt has an exceptionally smooth trigger pull and feels fine to my finger.

Actually the out of the box Colt has a little better trigger pull than a K frame and way better than a J. My 66 has custom trigger work and is great but no better than a new straight out of box Colt.

Between a new Colt K frame or Cobra, for fit and finish the Colt wins.

If you’re considering a 3”, look seriously at the 3” King Cobra. I really love mine.

Edit: I have a vintage Detective Special and the Cobra is just a modern production DS. They’re slightly smaller than a Smith K frame, larger than a J frame and the same size as a DS.

I have a 3” python also but it’s considerably bigger if you’re carrying it. For pure fun the Python is great.

Actually I am also planning to get a 686 SSR so that is why I am interested in a steel J Frame as a smaller revolver. Otherwise yes I would look into a K frame.

That being the case, buy the S&W J frame. They both have the same manual of arms. Push the cylinder release as opposed to pulling it on the Colt, and their cylinders rotate in the same direction, as opposed to the Colt.

My new wife has never fired anything but semi-autos and S&W revolvers. I love my Colt's but keep them at my farm in Iowa, and have exclusively S&W revolvers at our home in Florida for the previously stated reasons.

Under stress you will perform as you train, stick to one type of revolver for that reason.

Hi Folks,

I am looking for a small all steel revolver to shoot 38 and +P at the range and for home defense. I am drawn to the Colt Cobra because it has six rounds and because it is made for just 38 and +P. But I have heard some people say the trigger is too sharp and can cause irritation and pain to the trigger finger. So I am also looking at the S&W Model 60. I don't need it to shoot 357 but it is all steel and about the same weight as the Cobra. What do y'all think?

I have both, and all I can say on the topic is that nobody can have mine!!!

LOL … You really can’t go wrong with either one.
