Model 610?

I had the pleasure to buy a 610 last year. Put it in the safe. Never fired it.

My question is, are the moon clips required to correctly use the gun? It get the feeling from reading other posts it is a must. The gun didn't come with any so...

I also just recently picked up a 310, same thing in the safe, but same question applies I guess...

If you're shooting 10mm, you shouldn't need moonclips to shoot the gun, but you'll need the moonclips to unload the gun, as the extractor star won't be able to get at the rimless cases. At least, to unload the gun quickly; you'll still be able to poke out the empties with a rod one-by-one.

If you're shooting .40S&W, you'll need moonclips both to shoot and unload, since the rounds won't stay put for the firing pin to get at them, and the extractor will have the same issue with the rimless cases.

Pull the foam out of both top and bottom of the plastic box your 610 & 310 came in - there should be three 'clips in a ziploc poly bag. If not, contact S&W Customer Service. While it will function, as said, without them - if you can punch the empty 10mm cases out with a stick - it was designed to use them - and should have been delivered with them.

PS Ever notice how the only 10mm or .41 Mag loads you find for testing a new revolver of those calibers are 'stout' loads?

I have a early 610 no dash and don't use the moonclips for shooting 10mm. I just pluck the cases out with my fingernail. Never been an issue.
To fire .40S&W you will have to use the moonclips for proper headspacing.

It could also depend on when your 610 was made. The first one I owned from the original 1990/'91 production run had chambers which were like typical revolver chambers in that there was no 'shelf' to headspace the cartridge cases.

That said, I've had two other 610's (also from that same production run) that did have the chambers cut so that moonclips weren't needed. But that would only apply to 10mm ammo. .40 S&W ammo hadn't been invented when those early 610's were made.

At any rate, I think you'll get more consitent ignition with moonclips than without them.

The moon clip are not essential for the first cylinder; however, for your sanity and enjoyment of the revolver use the moonclips and get a demooner tool. Moon clips make the revolver about as much fun as it possibly can be! Besides, who DOESN'T want to imitate Jerry Miculek???
