I keep VERY detailed track of my target scores. They are analyzed to death and then tracked on my computer using Excel. I noticed that my scores with my 617 have been declining over the last two years.

I sent the gun back. Got it back almost immediately. They replaced the cylinder and barrel and recut the forcing cone. My gun, incidentally, has the steel, rather than aluminum, cylinder. Work was done quickly and there was no charge.

BUT I have a question. The gun had probably seen right around 9000 rounds. Doesn't it seem odd that with only 9000 round the gun would have needed so much work?

I suspect that the factory felt that it was easier and faster to replace the items rather than try to fine tune one new part, to one old part. A case of over-kill that benefits you, as well as S&W's reputation.

They must prioritize warranty work (which they should) as I sent an inquiry a few days ago about having the integral red ramp front sight on my 6" 629-1 replaced with a pinned Patridge and just received this response: "The cost to change the sight will be in the area of $100. Unfortunately at this time the turn around time is in the area of 12 months."

I guess I'll speak with some local gunsmiths.

I had the front sight on my Model 617 custom made by Dawson Precision. I love it! They do have a web sight, and if they don't have a stock sight to fit your gun, they will make one for you at the same cost. You might want to give them a call.
