Model 617, now it's mine

Christmas before last, my wife2b gave me a pre-owned 4" 617-8.
Whomsoever had it prior to myself knew what he/she was doin' because the sights are DEAD-ON!. Accurate to the point of almost boring. Way better than I could ever deserve.

And as blasphemous as I feel in saying so, it outshoots the bejeezus out of my dead-mint '58 vintage 8&3/8" model 17 no-dash, Hillaryhole and all.

Personally, I didn't notice any difference in feel of the action but then I install 11lb. Wolff trigger rebound springs in all of my non-vintage Smiths.
Just about all of my .22 shooting is single-action, anyway.

Thank the gods that the wife2B likes her Ruger mkII better than my wheelguns 'coz that 617's goin' in the box with me upon my purchase of the farm.

I thought about putting a dot on mine, but I got the sights set perfectly on it Saturday and don't want to have to re-sight it...although it was fun and wasn't real hard, plus it's an excuse to shoot it more :D

What is a good price range for this? I would love one. Any guidance on what - model is preferred?

My first NEW S&W was my 617-6, 4", 10 shot. Great gun. I put a gold bead front sight, hogue extended cylinder release, and hogue big butt wood grips on it.

I paid $725 brand new for my 617 a couple of weeks ago (and was glad to find it). It's a 6" and I love the feel of it, although they didn't have a 4" for me to compare it to.

1) 4" or 6"...... Or better yet, both!

2) Add some speedloaders: http://www.mydeo.com/videorequest.asp?XID=11289&CID=185955

3) You da Man! ;-)

Did you go with the SDM Gold Bead? I was about to contact them regarding my 6" 617: Gold Bead and Tactical Target

My 4" 10-shot 617 has about 7000 rounds thru it without a hitch.

It has the Wolff 11# rebound springs, and, the mainspring screw adjusted out about half a turn. Awesome gun. A real tack driver.

Surfdog..
Yes the SDM, i got mine from the Smith & Wesson website store. Was the round bottom type. The instructions tell what # drillbit to use for drilling the pin hole. Had to file the thickness to fit in the slot.

That's whay everybody needs two. One with open sights and one with a dot or scope......Ok, so everybody need three :-)

Nice 6" 617, I know you're going to love it. I love mine. By the way, I have not expereinced the problem you mentioned with ejecting spent cases.

I actually had an opportunity to make that happen but it would have cost me my 41 and I wasn't ready to give that up. I think I'm going to end up eventually scoping my 41 and just keeping this one as my plinker. I just got my second DS speedloader and another loading block so I can load up 100 at a time now :D

that is some gorgeous wood on there! I just ordered a set of Ahrends Retro Combats for mine and can't wait until they get here

I have a 4", 10 shot 617--thousands of rounds through it--no problems--very accurate. NEVER compare a S&W to a Taurus, they are in a different class ! !

Those are beautiful grips. Can you tell us what kind they are and where they can be purchased? Thanks.
