model 617

I've recently sold three 617 x 4" NDs on this forum, one for $1350, one for $1250, and one for $1150, so $1000 for the 4 inch gun seems like a good deal to me.

Three 617 x 6" NDs have sold recently on GB for ~ $1,700.

I'd be careful, but I would jump on this deal.

Keep looking. You can find them for around $800 if you look around.

Depends on your local market and how bad you want them. I’d be a buyer of both at $1000 each, but would try to get em for less. Boxes and docs would help ease the pain, but not a deal breaker. Remember those grips are worth $250-$350.

Don’t know if price is fair, but they’re pretty. Right down my alley too, as I’m a sucker for full lug barrel and combat grips.

I AGREE WITH BRB. 4" PRE LOCK M617s ARE MUCH SOUGHT AFTER. I WOULD READILY PAY $1,OOO. FOR THE ONE PICTURED......

I HAVE NO IDEA WHERE THE POSTER ABOVE, WHO THOUGHT THAT THESE GUNS WERE PRICED TOO HIGH BY $250., WOULD EVER BUY A COMPARABLE M617 FOR $750.........

IT CERTAINLY WOULD NOT BE IN MY NECK O' THE WOODS ! ! !

Well, as the previous responses show, opinions (and local pricing) vary wiiiiddeelly! Overall and nationwide, finding those early (6 shot, on lock) examples is getting harder and prices seem to be rising at a rapid rate. In the end, it's your decision, but buying either or both of them seems like a reasonable choice to me (if I wanted or needed a stainless K-22 today.)

$1000 is several hundred too much. Revolvers are 6 shooters... except for J frames. Guess I am showing my age?

I've said it many times before on this Forum but any price you pay today for guns like no-dash 617s will seem quite good in a few years. Would-be buyers must remember that they are no longer being made, there are no new ones left to buy and nice examples that are available for sale become fewer in number as time passes.

Shucks, I paid something like $175 for my six-inch 617 new and $450 for my four-inch used but the days of those prices are LONG gone! I used to pay 30 cents for a gallon of gasoline, too.

The ten-shot guns have their place and use with competitive shooters but the darned things just don't look right to me. Six-shooters oughta be six-shooters.

I prefer the New Model 617. I'm more of a Shooter than a Collector so the New Model 617 is fine for me. I bought a new M17 back in 1975 and shot it until it went out of time before giving it to my Son last year. He sent it back to S&W for a Rebuild and Refinish. I use my 617 mainly for Plinking, and Just mounted a Red Dot Sight. I have not sighted it in yet.

If the revolvers have original boxes and paperwork it would make some difference. If I were in the market for one of this vintage of 617 revolver and I could look at them and examine them and all was good, I would consider one of these even at that price. You have to take into consideration how many are readily available and how much they are going to be worth in the future. Now, if I was strictly buying them for speculation and trying to quickly flip them and make money on them, then that might be a different deal.

I wouldn't pay that much for either but then again. I don't collect for the sake of collecting any more. Now I only buy guns that I will shoot.
That said, I bought this 6" ND earlier this year for $500 after it sat in a LGS case for a few months priced at $600. It was filthy and missing box and original combats but it cleaned up well and made one heck of a shooter.
