Model 625

Jimmy, that would be the -4.
Last of the good ones.
Just so happens I may be selling one of mine.

IIRC, MIM was integrated before the lock was added.
ie; The 625-7 MG (.45 colt) had MIM hammer/trigger and prelock.
While the 625-6 MG in both colt and ACP are prelock and amount of MIM parts vary between the 2.

I guess in attempt to answer your question, I think the -8 had both lock, MIM and was also RB.

After re-reading your post, I noticed you're asking about the 5" and my answer was referring mainly to Mtn. guns as that is what I have more of in the 625. However, I do have a prelock -6 with MIM h/t, RB and 5" F/L barrel. I will say that it seems to be most accurate of my .45 handguns and also that -4's are the last model.

I have a 625-6 with a 5" barrel that I bought new in 2001. I bought it to shoot cast bullets. Without examining the gun, I have no idea if it's pre-lock, lock, or somewhere in between. Same for the parts. If it has powdered metal parts, they are so close to forged steel, I can't tell the difference. The gun is quite accurate. Same for the 625-3 3" gun I bought new in 1992. If it's all forged steel, everything seems to work as well as a gun with powdered metal parts. It's accurate, too.

If "Gun Brokers" is any rule, I see they are selling in the $650.00 / $750.00 range ?

Maybe starting and that’s probably current guns.

Forged/pre-lock guns will run more.

I seldom see any of them for sale locally. I picked up a -6 3" here a year or so ago at $800 IIRC. Which I considered a decent deal anyway. I expect if I was to run across one (pre-lock) around here in a 5", it wouldn't last long at $800‐$850. Different areas of the country will vary going both directions.

Good luck Jimmy!

The guns with the frame mounted firing pins, tend to have more durable firing pins. The forged internals vs MIM are more attractive looking...though in my experience don't result in any better trigger pull...unless you have one of them fancy triple locks, as another member once mentioned. On the lock, I just plug those. I used to have pre lock and post frame mounting firing pin guns during the Clinton era when S&W was British owned and everyone wanted them out of business for it...so we got a safety lock company purchase out of it

At any rate, to each their own. It depends on if you want a shooter or how long you'll be around for it to become a collectable :D

Good luck on your search.
