Is there (was there) a model 626?

In this Boston newspaper article Gun sports gaining favor among youths - Metro - The Boston Globe it says the young man is shooting his 626 22 revolver.

Having never heard of one of them, I googled it, and got many hits - most of which turned out to be typos about 629s.

There was this thread http://smith-wessonforum.com/s-w-re...0-super-rare-s-w-626-gb-better-move-fast.html from 2009, but it seemed to be more "making fun of" than "talking about".

So, does (did) such a gun exist, and if so, what is (was) it?

Or did the paper screw up?

No. Isn't it interesting that every time you read a newspaper article concerning something you know a little about, whether guns or Sopwith Camels, how many errors there are?

I'm not knocking the writers, they have to file a story quickly about something they know nothing about, and neither will most of their readers.

If I had to guess, I'm thinking it supposed to be be a H&R 929. It's a .22, and it's halfway reasonable to think someone flipped the digits. If you are writing the story and entering the number off the ten-key pad, the six and nine are next to each other and a typo is easy to believe. That, and a proofreader/editor who know exactly zero about guns. Why on earth does anyone expect accuracy out of the mainstream media when it comes to firearms?
