Picked up a Model 63 yesterday with serial no. AWU59XX without pinned barrel. This is my first Mod 63. From Supica & Nahas Standard Catalog of S&W, I believe it's from approximately 1987. That should make it a Mod 63-1. However, the gun is simply stamped MOD 63...without a dash. What am I missing? Which Model 63 do I have?

I have a model 36 no dash that should be a 36-1 by the s/n. There is an exception to every rule.

It would be interesting to see a picture of the actual model stamping. It wasn't totally out of the realm of reality to have it shifted to the right enough to negate it being placed on the gun properly. I'm just saying... It's been known to happen.

It could be a transition gun and the fitter wasn't used to stamping the -1 yet or he just forgot. It happens quite often.

pssman308, the -1 only applied to the 3" heavy barrel 36 and they overlapped in time with the no dash 2".

bd, your explanation is quite plausible cause the MOD 63 appears to me to be shifted to the right and there is very little room on the frame after the 63 to put a dash and number.

I enjoy shooting my Model K22/17s, but I believe my new-to-me Model 63 will be the perfect packin 22 for bummin around in the woods.

I've seen plenty of 63s (pinned and unpinned) and -3s, but I've not seen a -1.
