I recently bought a nice 38 spl. Model 64-2 serial No. AYD1690 located on the butt of the gun. Does anyone have an Idea of ship date?

Also it has a No. CDC 87106 on the left side what is this?

not sure what all the markings are for see photo's.

I'll try attaching some photo's have not done this before so hope they come across.

2" barrel It came with box and all paper work. the guy I got it from was a retired CA cop he sent it to S&W and had a 4" barrel put on it at factory and I have the 2" barrel also. Its very clean and tight.

What's the barrel length?

I have a 4" 64-3 Boston Police issue but it's a square butt.

I covet the round...

can we get a pic of the whole gun? It looks like you might have a target trigger, smooth. Looks real clean!!!

CDC-California Dept. of Corrections. They used them for a long time.
that makes sense as the guy I bought it from was a police officer in CA for 35 years. I did not ask if he used it or just bought it on line.
thanks for the info. it is a 2" that he put a 4" barrel on he had S&W do it I have both barrels.

I'm not sure I would know what one looked like. This is the first S&W I've owned.

more pics

Added pics of full revolver.

Any Idea of age?

4” 64s are everywhere. 2” round butt 64s are a little scarce. I would have the 2” put back on and find some wood round butt combats on it. Nice revolver you got there at any rate, and yes, it should be a great shooter.

That’s exactly what I did! It’s an awesome revolver ........

Or maybe split the difference and go for a 3".

3" RB is my current hunt, either a 64 or 65.

Aaaaah, combat trigger. See, I learn something new all the time.

Very nice gun gwb. I like the tapered barrel.

That wider, smooth trigger is very nice, what I had in my M-64 and on my M-66-3. It's sometimes called the Ranger trigger, for reasons unknown to me.

You have a M-64-2, so I think the parts inside are hard chromed normal steel. Early M-64's had true stainless hammers and triggers, which sometimes galled, so the change was made.
Other M-64's with standard/pencil barrels were made earlier and do not have the improved hammer and trigger. As-is, you have the lighter barrel and good grips, for a compact, relatively light, service grade .38. I'd certainly leave it as it as-is. A four-inch gun is much easier to shoot well than a snub and gives higher velocity. And you have a full-length extractor rod stroke. Snub Model 64 and similar guns have a short extractor rod, which doesn't always kick out empty cases well.

Finally, anytime you have work done on a gun, you always have to wonder if the work will be done RIGHT.

I was wondering it is a great little shooter and I love the trigger I'm holding a 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 inch pattern at 25 feet using 110 gr. JHC with 5.0 gr of W231 thats avg from 4-5shot groups off hand all double action. with 4.8 gr and 5.4 gr it went out to 3" groups avg.

So I'm very happy with the gun.

Gary

fortunately all the work was done by Smith and Wesson and I have all the paper work on that.

Thanks for all the info I'm learning a lot about the gun. And I plan to leave it just as it is.
Gary

Do you know what years they were manufactured?

I still have the 2" barrel. just shot it today and loved it.
Gary

I have 2 inch ( DAO ) , 3 inch, and 4 inch model 64s . They are my favorite K frames. Lot of fun to shoot.

Niiiiiiice. Glad it shoots well for you!

For what it is worth, the factory never made a Model 64 with a Round Butt and the standard tapered 4 inch barrel. 2 inch Round Butt Model 64s are rarer than the 4 inch Model 64s, but all Model 64s with the 4 inch tapered barrel are Square Butt frames. Current Model 64s with the round butt frame and a 4 inch barrel all have the heavy barrel. A Round Butt Model 64 with a 4 inch tapered barred is a very nice combination. I sent a Model 64 Round Butt to the factory and they installed the 4 inch tapered barrel that I provided. This is one of my favorite revolvers. A few other members have created this combination of features, but there are very few Model 64 Round Butt revolvers with 4 inch tapered barrels.

My congratulations to the OP! The 2" Model 64's are great little snubbies'! Here is my contribution to the thread. It wears Ahrends stocks in Goncalo Alves now and is my winter EDC. It is a -2 as well.

His 2” barrel was replaced with a 4”. If it was me I would send it back to have the 2” barrel put back on.

Thanks for the info It was a 2" and I still have the barrel and may someday convert it back. It is a great shooter I wish the guy I bought it from still had the original grips though.

Thanks for the feed back,
GW
