Model 64-7

I just bought it today and would like to know when it was shipped and what ctg marking is on the barrel is.was told it was a police mark.would also like to take black grips off and put on wood.sn is cfh5697

The 64-7 was factory chambered for the 38 Special. Thousands of 64s were sold to police and security agencies. Many of those agencies put a agency assigned number on the gun in various places on the firearm. Others on here may have information on date shipped. The best method of obtaining info is to write the Smith & Wesson Historical Foundation for a factory letter. S&W did sell handguns direct to some agencies but it will more likely show shipment to a police distributor who may or may not still have records of the sale. If S&W or the police distributor can identify the agency it was sold to the agency may have information about the unit or officer that the firearm was assigned to. Some of that information can be very interesting. Congratulations on your purchase. If nothing else, the 64-7s are very reliable and great shooters.

Probably ~2004 going by the 3-letter prefix, and what the SCSW lists in Appendix B, but comparing to other published ship dates is not always accurate. CTG is an abbreviation for Cartridge.

Thanks for the info. Can this fire the +p .some that they had showed it on the barrel but not this one

Any S&W revolver stamped with a model number is generally safe to shoot limited rounds of +p, just not a steady diet.

In my experience, 1994 was the year S&W made rubber grips standard, so the grips on your gun are likely original (let me be the guy who suggests a picture as soon as you are allowed to post one). If you want the steel and walnut look, you may change the grips, but it won’t be original.

Perhaps you can I set your sights on a wooden grip model with a serial number that starts with B. 64-5s are 4” square butt revolvers that were high volume with law enforcement, and are available on auction sites and at some surplus and police trade resellers.
