Hello all. I went to an Estate Auction this past weekend and purchased a no dash model 64. It is in great condition(90%) but does not have original grips and has a 4" barrel. I have a few questions in regards to my purchase:

1) Year of Manufacture Serial # is 894**
2) How do I know if it was a police trade in?
3) What is this fine revolver worth?

I am going to assume there is a letter in front of that number, and it is on the butt. If so it will probably have a 1D in front of it, which would date it to about 1980.
I'm not really an expert on values, but my guess is about $350 to $400.
Only way to find out if it was shipped to a PD is a factory letter.

That puts the year it was born at 1973.
That means it is the thinner barrel. That's good. They are much more sought after by collectors.
We'd love to see a picture.

I paid $250 for one last year and $350 for another. The serial numbers both had 3 letters, not just one. DBJxxxxx was one of them as I recall.

***GRJ***

The first model 64s had the tapered or standard barrel and were produced from 1970-'73, well before the three letter prefixes starting in 1980. I think most of them were made in the D prefix era.

By the way, what does "GRJ" mean? Is it a Navy term I missed out on? :)

I have a "pencil" barrel, 4" M64, that I bought in Italy in 1970. The interesting part is that it has a round butt. I was told that some of the guns ordered for Army Aviators were delivered with the RB, and some were diverted into the military exchange system. It came with magna grips, which I replaced with Herrett's Detective model, still got em all. It is one of my favorite guns which I carried on the Chicago PD while in uniform and could not get away with packing my BHP. I gouged out the rear sight channel a little so as to provide more light around the front, and it still shoots POI/POA with the 158 gr SWchp+p at 20 meters.
