Model 64 no dash

Ok gents, the other day I posted that I was looking at mod 64, but didn't have much info on it as I hadn't laid hands on it. Well, now it's been laid upon..........and came home too!

Model 64 no dash
4" pencil barrel
Ser# D5248xx
Assmebly# 99642 with a weird "S" laying on it's side and dots inside each loop of the "S"
Old "Paddle" holster made of all leather "MONTE CARLO" hand made USA H62

As you see it is how it came home, hasn't been cleaned or anything. Looks like it's in decent shape, locks up tightly.

Opinions?

Looks like a pretty nice one to me from here! Have no clue what that symbol might be? It was well done and well placed by someone who knew what they were doing, it seems to me. I owned a 64-1 once upon a time. Bought it at a TG&Y store back in the 70's. Later traded it for something else I thought I wanted worse. Sure wouldn't mind having it here with me today! Dunno what you paid for this one, but that revolver should be as reliable as an anvil and it sure does not look like it's been abused. Looks like it's been carried a bit, but not really mistreated much. Congratulations ... it's a fine revolver! Hope to find out more about that Lazy "S" with the dots!!

The 64-0 pencil barrel, the stainless version of the model 10 M&P was only made for a short period of time. After that they were all bull barrels. I have one I have had for a long time and don't plan on getting rid of it. Well balanced and a good shooter. All you need and nothing you don't need.

That's a nice one. I have one with a bull barrel and love it, need to get a pencil barrel like yours one of these days. How's it shoot?

@kthom - the lazy "S" is going to be my mission, really curious. Haven't seen a marking like that on any S&W I've encountered....doesn't mean it's not common at some time, but I haven't seen one before. As far as what I picked it up for....well it's a rescue that was turned in to be destroyed by the family of a deceased.....I spoke with them and got it for a C-note! Couldn't bear to see it go the way of a nuisance firearm. Not a gun I was looking for, but............ guess I have a soft spot for strays! LOL!

The "S", if from the factory, is a mark placed by an assembler, fitter or inspector. Even senior collectors and ex-employees are unsure of their meaning or significance. My favorite one is a small heart stamping. The V on the rear cylinder face is thought to indicate a stainless cylinder and is commonly seen.

These were made from 1970 to '73, and yours appears "carried some and shot rarely". Enjoy!

Congratulations! You found yourself a very nice example of a fairly desirable gun. The Md 64, 4 inch pencil barrel is one of my favorites. I found a perfect one less than a year ago. It had spent its entire life as a sock drawer gun. But no box or docs.

That's a really nice early 64. The Model 64 is just one of those go-to shooters that is low maintenance and has everything one ever needs in a fine revolver

Great gun, I am a big fan of the standard barrel model 64. They feel good, and they look the way a revolver should look.

I have never understood why Smith went to only heavy barrels on the model 64. When I go to gun stores, I always keep an eye out for an early model 64. They are not exactly rare, but since they haven't been made in 40 years, they are not easy to find either.

HD, nice looking model 64, that does not appear to have been shot a lot. The model 10/64's are just the idea no nonsense working revolvers. There will always been a need and a place for them.

What a great deal! And what a very good place to park a C Note! What a shame it would have been for that one to be melted. Everybody is happy!! I tend to prefer the heavy barrels, but I should not have traded my pencil barrel away. Sure wish I'd had a clue that there were not going to be many of those made. Mine was an excellent shooter, as are all of them. Congratulations! Thanks for saving that one ...

Congrats on saving a nice revolver. A 64 no dash is on my short list of guns to acquire, and they don't turn up very often.
