Did S&W ever make the 64 pencil barrel in the round butt frame? I've never seen any but the square butt at shops and shows. Also was the 64 made in 2"or 3", round or square butt?

Thanks for any info,
Ischia

Hello Ischia,

Last spring someone posted pictures of a 4" pencil barreled RB 64 that he created by swapping barrels on a heavy barreled 64. He wrote that S&W never manufactured that configuration. I don't recall seeing a pencil barreled 2" or 3" 64. My SCSW is not handy but even if they're not in it I wouldn't be supprised if a PD ordered a batch of unusual 64s.

Best Regards,
Gil

I don't know how to move old threads forward, but do a search on:

Model 64 4 inch Tapered Barrel with Round Butt

This is include a photo of the one I had the factory make up for me.

Hope this helps.

I don't recall seeing any pics of older 64 4" with round butt......I would love an older 4" HB with a round butt, although my 4" 64-7 will more than suffice.

Yes, the Model 64 was made in both the 2", 3" and 4" versions.

Both my 2" and 3" Model 64's have the round butt configuration.

Here are three more photos of my custom Model 64. This is a Model 64-5 from J&G that originally had the heavy barrel. I sent it to Smith & Wesson along with a used tapered barrel and they did the installation. I then slightly rounded the top of the frame with small files and polished the metal to match the rest of the frame.

I really enjoy this Model 64. It is both comfortable to shoot and accurate.

Hope these photos help.

Steve

I like that RB 4" tapered 64 alot! You have to wonder why S&W didn't make them from the factory like that.

I would settle for a RB 4" taper barrel Model 10 but these are getting harder to find.

scha,

Neat custom Model 64! It would be interesting to see - a couple of generations from today - what S&W collectors would make of your changes - and whether the gun would letter correctly.

In the meantime, thanks for the post & pictures - and enjoy!

Jerry

I have a 4" 64 round butt pencil barrel. I round butted it myself and I LOVE it. It fits my hand well and that 4" thin barrel has a balance that can't be beat.

Mine was not in the best condition when I got it so I polished it and round butted it. I also replace a few word out parts like the hand and cylinder stop and now it is one of my favorite Smiths. I mounted some Uncle Mikes finger groove grips for a round but and it works great. Makes an ideal kit gun.
