Model 64 Question

Hi all,

I have a pre-MIM, pre-IL model 64 with a round butt. It has the grooved front and backstraps that the SCSW indicates were used for 18 months. It has the newer "teardrop"-style cylinder release button. My question: I was told that almost all the M64s had square butts; is this true? I haven't seen that many of them and I don't know.

That's too bad. Sounds like you got one of the bad ones that made it past inspections. If you'll send it to me I will do my best to destroy it for you.....by putting several hundred thousand rounds thru it. I wouldn't worry about it. I've seen several with the round butt option. Is it a 4 inch or 3 inch barrel? I actually like the looks of the round butt better.

From my observations, nearly all the 2" and 3" model 64s were RB, and all earlier 4" were SB. Later production guns of all barrel lengths were RB, I think.

Beretta682, Thank you for your offer, but I wouldn't ask anyone to do something that I wasn't willing to do myself!

It is a four-incher. I prefer round-butt revolvers because they fit my hand well. I have never had a squre-butt gun, in any frame size, that I could handle well. I know that many people like the square-butt guns, but to me the design is counterintuitive; the grip is narrowest where the longer fingers of the hand are, and widest where the "pinkie" finger is. Oh well, maybe I just don't get it; wouldn't be the first time!

I had one just like it-S&W replaced my 64-3 that they cracked trying to move the POA/POI over 2 inches, at 25 yards. It's the last of the great ones, enjoy it!
