I picked this up from a co-worker for a house gun for my grandmother. Its a model 64, ser # d5840XX .38 spl, 4" taper barrel pinned, ss, locks up tight with a nice single and double action pull. I cant find to much info on it other than they stopped making taper barrel in 1973-74(found on internet?).

I got $350 in it with no box, and it cleaned up a good bit from the condition in the pics.

Any one know value, give a year of production, or any good info? Tried google and gunbroker, but found nothing on the 4" taper barrel, plenty of bull barrels and snubs though.
Thanks

M64 with tapers are great looking guns, and you have a nice example. You paid less than most are going for nationally and that is a good thing.A lot of guns are old prison guns and will have the bull barrels. I found a few on Gunbroker.com going for$399 - $567, so you did pretty well. For grandmas you got her a good one and she/you should have a blast shooting it. Feed her some +P ammo and she will reward you with plenty of good times.

Welcome to the Forum! Can never have enough new members! You say it cleaned up from the pics!!?? It looks awfully pristine to me as it stands. Not easy to come across pencil barrels like this one, and even more rare in this condition. (We call them 'pencil barrels' back East, 'cause that's what they are!)

One suggestion: Make sure the screw holding the cylinder latch does not loosen when shooting. I have had this problem on 3 stainless guns from this era. Nail polish as a 'glue' does not help. Some form of Loc-tite perhaps, another poster will know for sure. There have been some recent postings on this gun, F.Y.I. Good shooting.

Very nice looking example and a super price. You should be thankful you came upon that gem. They are hard to find in the tapered barrel configuration.

My "pencil barrel" M64 was made in early 70s, just like one above except that it has round butt.

Great gun. I would like to get a 4" taper to go with my "length challenged" model.
