Model 64 Snub Questions

You guys are nuts...........Can't wait for the next post............Thought I knew my Smith's over the years. How dumb was that. I enjoy ever post here.

Photoman...I'm assuming this photo is an example rather than your personal pistol...correct? Would you say the barrel is tapered or straight? Until the experts confirm what S&W actually built, are we to assume that it's our perspective that changes from photo to photo? I've looked at over 50 images of both 2" 10's and 64's and there is still a distinct difference in my minds eye when I look at them.....What do you see? Zeb

Should I post up pics of the Model 10 I got in December? Zeb and I corresponded about the gun and it may be a "heavy barrel" version as well. I should get out the verneir caliper and take some measurements just to satisfy my own curiousity...

Comment: The Standard Catalog of S & W, M64 Section, Variations, states:
"Several heavy barrel lenghts (2", 3", 4") made for the NYPD in double action only, with a matte finish marked "NY-1" in the yoke cut with bobbed hammer." So it would seem that 2" HB's do exist as stated by others in this Thread, but maybe not on regular production guns.

Question for David Sinko and Victor Louis: Could you share with us why you both indicated that you like .265" grooved triggers rather than .312" smooth combat triggers on the M64 Snub.

Thanks,
JFOHIO

This is definitely interesting, but 2" NY-1s are all over this forum and the barrels seem identical to those on any other 64 snub. That said, I compared a 2" 64 to a Victory with 4" tapered barrel and the 64 has noticeably heavier barrel walls (although not as heavy as the 3" or 4" versions).

Could it be that the standard 2" 10/64 barrel, while having a discernible taper at the muzzle, was designed as a heavy version? Maybe some muzzle-on pics of 10/64 snubs compared to earlier M&P snubs would be helpful.

Though I can't prove it, (only because it's been sold a long time ago and I didn't take pictures of it) I can assure you that my personal NY-1 2" was NOT a tapered barrel revolver or I wouldn't have purchased it. On the personal opinion side, I don't like the tapered barrel at all..I think they're ugly (including the one in my hand at this minute)...I love the Straight, Heavy Barreled 2" 64 Snubs that at this point in time, may only exist in my twisted mind. As many times as I pick up the gun I'm looking at, with it's goofy little pointy barrel, the "Ugly" simply will not go away, no matter what angle I hold it at. I'd gladly trade this pristine 2" 64 for one that "appears" to have a Heavy Barrel....Photos available to anyone interested..My Wife won't miss it, I'll be happy, and one of you will have the Snubbie of your dreams....Talk to me....Zeb

Zeb, are you seriously considering getting rid of it or just joking? What kind of trigger does that one have?

It's a No dash with a serrated trigger...I'm not sure what the dimensions of the trigger are...somewhere between 1/4" and an Inch. It's rumored there is a third trigger option for the 2" 64 but I won't go there...:) I will PM you sometime tomorrow. Zebulonicus

Black_Sheep has my Grail Gun....His 2" HB or tapered Barrel 10 is worth a lot of money to me. Well, maybe not a LOT of money. Black_Sheep, Please do post your 10...Not only is it Beautiful, but it will surely add to the confusion and that's always a plus when it comes to S&W. I admire and respect SmithNut (we've had dealings) but I trust my own eye first. There's a simple answer here, and I'm sure SmithNut would concur now, if not earlier in his expertise as a S&W Authority, that as soon as you say S&W didn't build something, somebody waves an example of it under your nose. I know things....:) Zebulon

I still like the 4" tapered barrel better, had my choice recently between a 4" and a 2" Model 64 no dash. I bought this one and my friend bought the 2" one. Now I'm thinking I should have grabbed them both.

Looks like another S&W Mystery to me.....The thread has nothing at all to do with 4" 64's...................:(

I would like to remind everyone that at one time S&W was famous for custom orders. Heck even today law enforcement can order almost anything.

Luis, you Sir, are right on the money. The problem we seem to have, is that there are some of us, perhaps myself included, who are unwilling to say what we see, rather than believe what we've been told. Curious Huh?....Methinks there is some business going on behind the scenes....Maybe we'll get an answer soon. In ny event, it's without a doubt that we love our 64 Snubs, whatever they are.....Zebulon

I hope this gun belongs to a Forum member...I bid it up to $575 last year on GunBroker and dropped out (my funds dropped out)...I couldn'tbear to look at the final selling price. I magine my surprise if I had won it thinking I was buying a HB from the photos and received a regular barrel?! Actually, that happened once...It's the pickle now in my Safe that belongs to my Wife....that pointy little crapper I posted earlier...Man that thing bugs me! :) Zeb

Now that gun has a great barrel profile. Does not appear to have the taper that others seem to have in prior posts. So what are we looking at? Heavy or standard? What say you.

Here you go Zeb! I don't know if it's a "HB" or not, all I wanted was a 2" Model 10 to go with my 4" Model 10.

The really ironic thing about my Model 10 was that I planned to bid on Zeb's Model 64 until he pulled the auction. He was trying to sell the M64 to finance the purchase of the same Model 10. The 'net really does make the world seem smaller.

If the Model 64 is available again shoot me a PM...
