In looking over some of the current J-frame revolvers today, I noticed at one of the websites they show the 640 in 2 inch version with the IL and others don't have it. Some are indicated as being recessed for moon clips while others don't. Others don't say if theirs is recessed or not. Apparently, there are quite a few of these in all sorts of configurations.

Can anyone shed some light on this? They appear to be excellent back ups or for CCW from the size and weight. I wouldn't think, even though SS, they would hold up to much shooting with 357 ammo, however.

Why not?

Some people (myself being one of them) think the all-steel J frames can withstand sustained shooting of .357s at least as well--and possibly better--than their K-frame counterparts.

They're not as tough as N frames, but those are a little difficult to slip in a pocket.

Because they're smaller and lighter. I don't think J-frames were intended for a steady diet of 357 Magnum ammo...an SP101 yes, but not a J-frame S&W.
