I'm wondering about a new model 640 38 I saw today, mfg 1991-1992 I've read. its a 3 inch with uncle mike's grips, box even states uncle mike's combat grips. is this a maybe special order as I don't know what grips came on them and I know 3 inch is uncommon. thanks for any info

According to the Standard Catalog of S&W, the Model 640 was introduced in 1989 in either 2" or 3" barrel lengths. The 2" came with Goncalo Alves wood stocks and the 3" came with Morado wood stocks. The 3" was discontinued in 1993. I would guess the factory changed over to the Uncle Mike's but don't know when.
The Centennial is an outstanding revolver in both 2" and 3". I hope you're successful in landing the 3" you're looking at . . . they don't show up for sale very often.
Here are comparison pictures of both the 3" and 2" with what I believe to be the original wood stocks on the top example in each case . . . the ones on the bottom are in their working clothes.

Thanks very much for info/opinions. I've bought 2 smith j frames nib from this estate lgs in handling, this one is also from the estate. $425 is the price, can't find 3 inch on gb to compare, only 2 inch but I'm sure I better make the call tomorrow to hold it

Yes Linde it is sound as new locks up good never fired with box papers tools etc.surprised about the grips but they fit my hand really good and as I said the box label said uncle Mike's. Bet a 3 inch with those grips would shoot well

$425 is an excellent price for the 3" 640.
