Model 640 3" values...

Hey, this may be my first post here after being a member for some time...

But, I have been ofered a 640 in trade for another firearm, and have been looking for values. Never have looked really at values before, so I'm not even sure what to look for.

Anywway, I have been offered a 640 with a 3" barrel. Haven't seen it yet, but the seller says it is marked .38. In my searching, I have not seen a 3" 640 in .357, so I am assuming that this is one of the earlier guns. Is that thinking correct? Also, would the 3' mean that this is a .38 only? I'll have pictures today I think, but was just curious about those points.

Then, assuming that the gun is in good shape, no issues, what kind of value would one place on that? I have been searching, but don't see a whole lot of 640's out there and only a couple of 3" guns. It's hard to come up with a trade value when I can't find actual prices people are getting for them.

Other than that, any thoughts on the 3" 640 are welcome.

i have one of those guns,and i made a pocket holster for it and it carries great in the front pants pocket of old man pants or fatigues but not in jeans.
there was one on here the other day that was listed for $475.00 and it sold but i don't know if the byer paid that much or not.

So, was the Centennial the only 640 made with a 3" barrel?

i have never seen another model with a 3 inch barrel. mine has a barrel marked airweight but it is not an airweight. it is in the s&w book made this way, probaly using up left over parts, so they must have made some airweight guns with 3 inch barrels.

No, others were as well. I know the 940, 632, and probably some others.

I think I may be trading a M&P .45 for the 640+ cash. I love the M&P, just doesn't grab at me. It fits well, shoots well, feels good. Just doesn't hold onto me like some other guns have done.

I haven't really owned any S&W revolvers, and have been thinking about picking one up when this opportunity presented itself.

I saw a 640 .357 Mag, new, with IL, at a gun shop in CDA, ID Sunday. price wa $599+tax. This is the only 640 3" Ive seen in some time but I dont think they are extreemly rare either.
