model 640 for dummies question

Just beginning to look for a model 60 or 640 pre lock to fit in between my 642 and 66, 686 plus snubbies.

I probably won't fire .357 in it, so rated for .38 sp +P would be fine with me.

Any specific suggestions as to which -dash series or anything else to look for? Thanks.

The first 640 is a .38 Special, most of the -1s and above are .357s with the exception of the -2, which was an NYPD authorized backup gun by report. I think they all work pretty much the same. Hope this is helpful.

I have a 640-1 that had an incredibly smooth trigger from the factory, but I had it smoothed even more and installed an XS Big Dot sight. I think the lock came in with the -3s. Even if you don't want to run .357s it is nice to have that option available.

Howdy- I was able, over time, to find a couple of these; one each for me and my wife. They are my favorite J Frame that is not .22 cal, and enough is out there in the way of grips to make it do-able for nearly anyone. YES .357s are a bit much, but I shoot them once in a while to stay current. The blast and flash have people at range looking and when they see the little gun, don't know what to think. Just used to 9s, I guess . ( I have a couple of 9's too, not a dig on them!)

The 640 ND usually runs from $150-$200 lower in asking prices than the magnum models. It will have the "little shorter" and non-shrouded barrel. If you will only be considering 38-special....the 640 fits the pocket a little better, is a tad lighter and will handle a few +P's like most all late-model 38-specials will. I don't see a large advantage in the +P from a short-barrel snubbie. Too many good SD 38-special commercial loads already out there.

If it happens to have Pac's on it....you can yank them off and install a set of used 442/642 boot-grips, or any other J-Frame grips you desire.

Just keep in mind that the no dash had a front sight blade integral with the barrel, whereas the -1 and later had a pinned front sight. Not only is the original pinned front sight black (easier for me to use) but it also allows installation of a big dot, or other night sight, if you prefer.
