Maybe this is a dumb question but I would like to get a set of side plate screws for my 640 just in case I lose one for example taking the cylinder and crane off for cleaning. I don't take the side plate off, just my Clip Draw and cylinder and crane screw. So do I call Smith and order a set of screws? Probably the local hardware store wouldn't have those stainless steel revolver screws.

Call s&w or go to midway or someplace like that and order them. They aren't very expensive.

It seems to be surprise to many but the manufacturer makes replacement parts for its guns? This is hardly ever mentioned! Where does everyone suppose Midway, Brownell's, etc. get their parts from?????

800-331-0852, they may even comp you a set! try that with Brownell's or any of the others!!!!!!

Alk8944 Thanks for the tip about calling Smith customer service about the screw set. They are sending me a set free of charge and the tech I talked to said they don't recommend taking the side plate off which I knew but he also said you don't want to use Rem Oil or any other lube inside the gun that it would gum up the action. He said it was not necessary. That turned around everything I've been told since the 70's. I wonder how many gunsmiths would agree?

He may be correct regarding anything that will leave a residue, but 1 or 2 drops of a light lubricant, such as Break Free helps keep things running smooth and reduces wear.

Mine had a buggers screw and they are sending a new set! Thanks for posting this!
