Model 645 age help

Hi there folks: I have a new to me Model 645 with serial number TBBXXXX and the Spec/Ord 7225.

Can you please help me determine when this amazing handgun was manufactured? I have narrowed it down only to sometime between 1985 and 1988.

Probably the 225th day of 1997. Spec order is the Julian date shipped.

The Spec Ord Code is actually a Julian date when the label was printed, indicating the 225th day of 1987. That's closer to the the manufacturing date than a factory letter, which would tell you when it shipped. The fired case envelope is also dated, if it's still in the box.

Haha generally good advice but for a likely 1987 gun, there will be no fired case envelope in the box.

You can also send an e-mail to S&W with your serial number and they will reply with their records as to a born-on date.

Chad was right. I looked it up an the SCSW , TBBXXX should be 1987 not 1997.
