If I wanted to replace the barrel on my Model 645, where on earth could I find one? The only thing I can find are complete sets of parts that INCLUDE a barrel, all for very big big bucks. If I can find one, would it require any machining for it to be safe?

The original barrel on this 645 wouldn’t shoot worth doo-doo. So, I had Bar-Sto Precision Machine install one of their match barrels, which made it primo good:

But, that was some time ago, like in the ‘90s. BAR-STO hasn’t catalogued 645 barrels since their move to Sturgis SD. That does not necessarily mean that they can’t still make one. Wouldn’t hurt to ask; you’ll likely get one of three possible answers: yes, no, or hell no.

Very nice 645! How did you get a single side Safety? and Who did the Front Side swap to Novak Style? I have a 645 and would love to be able to put Night sights on it like I have on my 4506-1.

MidwayUSA does have 4506 barrels in stock which according to Numrich are the same part number as the 645 Barrel.

What are you trying to achieve with replacing the barrel in your S&W 645?

The safety was the factory part for a 745, which I ground back to clear the left side 645 grip, then sandblasted off the dark finish:

The front sight is actually a Wilson Combat 1911 white dot sight, ‘cause that’s what I had handy at the time. The nice thing about that MMC adjustable rear sight is that the precise height of the front sight is not critical. Third Generation hammer, trigger and drawbar were substituted for the clunky originals in order to achieve a properly smooth double action trigger pull.

You you should have grabbed a set of 745 grips. Midway had them as recently as five or so years ago. The 745 safety is kinda rare.
Ed Brown for a number years ago had single sided safety levers.
I altered one of those Ed Brown levers to leave an unaltered 645 frame as a safety that would not decock the pistol. Causing a cocked and blocked condition.

I got a set of 745 grips, the original wood ones. Got them in an auction lot on a 745 that had a court order of disposal (serialized parts). Thought that they may be desirable at some point but is the 645 and 745 the only models they fit on?

My 645, and 745 don’t consistently shoot cast bullets well. That’s being charitable. My pistols hate cast bullets.

The Bar-Sto in my old Colt 1911 shoots 200 grain lead SWCs like it was built for that purpose. I would imagine a Bar-Sto 6/745 barrel would shoot cast well, also.

As much as I like my 645, and 745, I just don’t shoot them enough to justify a new barrel.

Nosler 185s shoot very well in my guns. 200 XTPs do pretty ok.
