I bought a used model 65-4 a couple of months ago. Recently, I started getting a lot of light strikes, so I figured I would just try replacing the springs. I ordered a set from Wolff and followed the disassembly instructions in the FAQ here. Got the springs in with no problem, but now when I put it back together, the trigger doesn't reset. Without the sideplate, everything functions perfectly. It's only after I screw in the sideplate that the problem occurs. My only guess is that I'm doing something wrong with the placement of the hammer block, but I don't really know. Anyone got any ideas?

To prove your theory leave the block out and test it again. But, I think the rebound spring is too light if the trigger won't reset. Use in the ball park of a 15LB spring.
Make sure you tighten the strain screw fully also. Might be smart to put the side plate on before working the action.

When the hammer block is installed you slide it up all the way, then place the sideplate back on using your fingers to press it on. Don't use a screwdriver ever to put the plate back on or you could damage something.

Thanks for the reply, 500. I tried what you suggested and reassembled, leaving out the hammer block. Same problem, pull trigger, no reset. The rebound spring I installed was a 15 lbs spring from Wolff so I figured that would be heavy enough. I never had the reset problem before I took it apart to replace the springs, so I just tried putting back the old rebound spring that was in there (no idea if it is factory or not). Put everything back together, and still no trigger reset. So I think I can rule out the hammer block and the rebound spring... any other suggestions? Again, it only has the reset problem after screwing down the sideplate. If I just press the sideplate down with my fingers and leave the screws out, there is no problem. I've got the strain screw tightened all the way on the mainspring, and I even tried putting back in the old mainspring and it's no different.

I did remove the hand and trigger to give everything a deep clean when I first got in there. Is it possible I did something wrong with the spring on the hand?? I don't think that's it, but just grasping at straws now.

Did you keep the sideplate screws straight - that is, make sure the number three screw made it back into the number three hole?

Yep. All three screws are slightly different and I made note of which ones go where.

Everything fits only 1 way... I don't see how something is put together wrong. The hand fits on the trigger, it has a spring attached. If you pull the hand backwards, then let go it should snap into the cutout, correct?

I wonder if something is bent, can't tell from here...

Factory has an 18LB spring. Put one in there and see if the trigger resets.

Without any other information I'll be guessing on what it could be.

Yeah, at this point I'm pretty sure something is bent. There are marks on the inside of the sideplate where part of the trigger is rubbing against it and I think part of the trigger is getting caught on the edge of the channel in the sideplate where the hand rides, which is causing it to not reset. I'm just going to admit defeat and take it to the gunsmith... whatever I could do to try to fix it at this point would most likely just make matters worse.

try to eliminate parts.

install hammer and insure it moves freely
install trigger and insure it moves freely with the hammer.

install rebound and mainspring with the screw loose just to work the action and see if you can ID the culprit.

if nothing at this point, tighten the mainspring screw and then install the side plate and see if the problem shows up.

if there are rub or gouge marks on the side plate, could a hammer/trigger pin be high causing interference. if you find high pins, tap them flush.

was the gun working prior to disassembly?

good luck

Thanks for the advice, guys. I took one more stab at it and was able to narrow it down to the hook on the trigger (or whatever the part of the trigger is called that touches the hammer) like I had suspected. Apparently when I first disassembled everything, I somehow slightly bent the pin that the trigger goes on. I gave the pin a couple of taps to the rear, and that seems to have fixed it. Before, the trigger was not flush with the other parts and was getting stuck in the sideplate which would cause it to not reset. Everything seems to be working fine now, though. Guess that's what beater pistols are for!

Thanks again for helping out a S&W newbie!
