So my local shop took in some model 66's, all from the same guy.

A 2 1/2" 66-1 P&R (dates to 1980) orig. box, serial #'d grips, and papers (no tools)- I bought this one.

A 4" 66 (no dash) P&R orig. box, orig. wood grips, and papers (no tools) - may have been the guys duty gun, but didn't look abused.

A 6" P&R (don't recall if it had a dash), but it has the same style box as the 66-1 (with papers) and orig. wood grips.

Each one was $450. No safe queens, as these all showed signs of being fired (but not abused).

Is there any reason to get excited about the other two for the $450 asking price?

Thanks.

Update:

Decided against buying the other two.

Here's the 2 1/2" I did buy.
Added the Ahrend grip (original grips in new condition & a Pachmyr came with the gun). Even still have a couple of holster left from when I used to have a 2 1/2" 19 (went to the ex when I got divorced :().

You ask about 66s on your 66th post, LOL. $450 sounds like a pretty good price for them, especially for the snubbie. But it's kind of hard to say without seeing them.

Since we are talking about 66's in this thread, I have a question. Forgive my ignorance, I am new at some of these S&W trades/sales, but what makes a model 66 worth $1500? After checking some of the auction sites & my local gun emporium I don't have a clue. I have the S&W book, but there was not a lot of help there.

In the classified section there is one for that price. I got rebuked for daring to ask an information/learning question. I was not asking it to alter the price/value. Of course the rebuker did not help me with an answer or a PM, he just told me to PM the seller. Of course no answer from the seller either. So maybe some knowledgeable S&W enthusiast could help someone with less experience and give me an answer.

drjjpdc,
I hope that if you have seen a model 66 for $1500 asking price, that it was a pre-lock with a 3 inch barrel. These are not what I would call rare as there are a number of them out there, but the people who have them just do not let go of them. They were not a regular production item with the 3 inch barrel. They were made in a few limited production runs.

Are they really worth that much? I suppose that if someone wants one bad enough and has the money, then yes. I would not pay that much for one. I lucked into one a while back for $500. They are great handling guns, but not $1500 worth of great.

Thank you Larry & scuba,

I have about 10 S&W's but nothing really rare. I appreciate the time you took to give me an answer.

Nice 66 and love the grips! You did real good and picked the best one IMO. Just bought a 2.5" myself. Pics to follow once it quits raining.
