Hi, I am considering a 66-2 4" barrel revolver. I found one in 90-100% condition. Don't know the serial #. Are these a good solid gun? Price range? How do they do at the range? All of it's features are what I am looking for. Any help or comments would be appreciated. My current Smith shooter is a 1905 4th. change, shipped 6-1919, and still functions well. Thanks, Bob

66-2

i have several of those, it is one of my favorites, just don't shoot 125 grain bullets in it, can cause forcing cone cracking,,stick with 158 grain bullets.

It is as good as you 4th change if not better. Just don't shoot 125gr or less in 357 mag. or you may not have it very long. It is in the same boat as your 4th, parts are hard to find.

Hello Bananaman!

The S&W Model 66 is my favorite handgun . . . and I've owned several over the past 40 years.

I keep mine stoked with .357's, but practice with .38's about 75% of the time.

Check GB for recent sales figures.

Enjoy.

66 is a great gun..I love mine-

66-2 4"

I have one and it is the nicest balanced revolver I own. Love to shoot it. It is a fine weapon.

Working in south miss climates, heat, humidity, rain, etc. I was excited when the stainless smiths rolled out. That 66 4 inch was much more forgiving of wiping off and down than a blued or nickel 19. You could wipe the 66 off once or twice a week and keep it up. I have an early 66 that I carried for several years as a patrol officer that still looks great. That does not mean that grip removal was not necessary,as you could have some pitting occur if you did not address this occasionally, especially in rain and if you rested a sweaty hand on the backstrap.

I have a 66-2 in 4 inch and it is one of my favorite shooters. I have run a lot of 38 relaods thru it for practice. Lately I have taken to loading up some 357 rounds with 158 grain lswc and they are fun to shoot. One thing I like about the -2 more than the earlier versions is the smooth trigger. Infact I am probably going to get a -2 trigger for my -1 because it feels better to me.

Great solid guns. My 4" 66-2 LEO trade in has over 20,000 rounds through it, and still locks up like the proverbial vault.

It's also the most accurate handgun I own. I advise you to get it, shoot it, love it! Regards 18DAI.

Bullseye,

Why are parts hard to find for a Model 66-2? Wouldn't these have been made after 1980? I realize S&W may not stock forged, firing pin hammers any more, but a MIM trigger would still fit and so should a new barrel.

Thanks.

The -2's are great guns with the 2 1/2" and 4" bringing top dollar(I've seen them from $400 to $650 in shops.....they always sell!). The 6" is a personal favorite with prices only somewhat lower. Snatch up good ones while you can!
