I'm new to wheel guns and I have been trying to soak up as much knowledge as I can from you all. I have been surfing the web during my long days manning the TOC in Afghanistan looking for a good deal. I was wondering if $469.95 was a good price for a used model 66 357mag w/ 4in barrel. J&G Sales has some police trade-ins for sale. I have a 686 on the way from Bud's and I was thinking "why not get another S&W revolver." So is this deal worth pursuing? I have a little money saved up from spending 10 months here and I want to make the most of it. I am due for leave here in a few days and I have a firm belief that the wife will try to confiscate the 686 for herself once she fires it. So a back up .357 wouldn't be to much of a stretch would it?

The 66 is a very nice gun and that appears to be the going price for one with a 4" barrel nowadays. If you need a back up .357 service style revolver for your 686, it's a good choice.

If you want to pursue a different path - look for a good .22 revolver, espcially if you do not reload. A K-frame Model 17, 18 or 617 would be my first choice. It will probably cost you more than the 66, but you will shoot it more because ammo is so cheap.

Sounds like a good idea but the women in my family like high caliber guns. I get laughed at every time I mention a .22 cal.

The price on the 66 is a fair deal. In California used 66s go for $550 to $600. If you decide on a 66, I think you will find that they are a better all around revolver than a 686. Nothing wrong with the 686 but a K frame magnum justs handles better in my opinion.
Good luck,
Howard

Great revolver for a fair price. The 66-2 is one of my favorite sixguns.

I agree with roaddog28. The 66 handles faster and points more naturally than the 686. Lighter and less bulky too. Thank you for your service! Good luck and stay safe. Regards 18DAI
