Model 66 Impulse Purchase

Have been looking for a 2.5" Nickel Model 19-4 or earlier in very good condition. Have not had any luck.

But looking at one of the auction sites I saw what was advertised as a 4" Model 66 no dash with original box.

It really looked nice and the seller is an FFL with lots of sales who takes credit cards, so I felt comfortable. And in today's rather insane gun market I felt I can get back most of what I paid if I do not like it. Complete impulse purchase.

I will probably enjoy shooting this much more than the nickel 2.5" Model 19 I was looking for.

If I got took I do not want to know.

I don’t mind shooting most any gun, some are shot less though. If one really needs to shoot 300 rounds a weekend, that’s what a Glock 19 is for.

I estimate I paid an extra $200 over the low market price for the original box plus gun in very good condition, the convenience and security of buying from an established FFL with a credit card and the plain fun of making an impulse purchase.

Speaking of impulse buys.... I picked up a 66-2 at the gun show. 2.5" barrel. Been a few years ago. Talked the seller down $70. It worked for us. My 1st 66. I have updated it with new stocks that work better for me. The next day, I went back and bought a 686-6 Pro Series. Bob

Bushmaster1313, without knowing the price you paid, it’s impossible to make an intelligent comment on its price, but looking at what you got, if you’re satisfied with the price, all that matters is that you got a good one, whether on impulse or after a long search, it’s still a good one! With the pinned barrel and the small space between the cylinder and the flash shield, I make it out as a 66 ND or -1. IMHO, these are the most desirable variants in the whole series. Congratulations!

Exactly. Play the long game.

I paid $800 for a pristine Underwood M1 Carbine back in the early 2000's. It came with the original sling and oiler, original buttstock mag pouch and and original soft case. That was a lot of $$$ for one back then.

Today, the CMP Italian re-imports go for more than that, as well as the well worn coming out of Eithiopa.

Obvisouly bushmaster1313 you're not the first on here to make an impulse purchase LOL. I would say I whole heartedly endorse your selection!! I just passed up a 39-2 at a very good price because #1 I'm waiting on the Springfield Hi-Power to arrive any day at the shop, prepaid hehehe, and #2 I really want to save up my funds for another S&W round gun

Similarly, I've been looking for a 2.5" Diamondback when I stumbled upon this nearly flawless 4". It's not what I was looking for, but it was too pretty to leave behind. Still looking for a 2" DB, preferably nickel.

@bushmaster1313: In my non-collector and non-expert opinion you only overpaid if you are unhappy with your purchase - how long does one look for just the perfect gun, car (cross out and fill in whatever you are looking for) at the "right price"??

The finish on mine is a bit short of perfect, the grips have been altered a little, and it came with some slightly confusing paperwork... maybe I overpaid a bit, but the point is that I am happy with what I got for how much I paid. 40~50 years ago, some LEO in Louisiana trusted his life to this gun, before his department upgraded, probably to one of the Wonder 9's. He left in good condition for me to shoot paper .... I'm happy it found a home with me.

Sometimes impulse buys are the most satisfying...

I threw up a bid on an auction site the other day on an S- numbered M29-2 on a lark, thinking there was no way it would be enough to win. Well, guess what... it's on it's way to my FFL.

That's why this stuff is so much fun.

Several years ago I overpaid for a 5 screw pre model 27 I wanted. It's worth at least twice what I paid for it and I have had several years of enjoying it! Can't miss! Guns do not depreciate like cars, boats and golf clubs!
