Without looking it up in the book I noticed my S&W's made between 1938 and 1980 have the logo on the right side .
Before and after that looks like the left.

Excuse the noob question, but what is the advantage of porting the barrel that way?

It is to reduce the muzzel jump/flip...one thing I can say for sure is the muzzel blast increases dramaticly...wow.
