Hello all. I traded recently for a 66 3 inch round butt. The hammer has been bobbed and I would like to replace it. It is the type with the firing pin in the hammer. Will any old "K" frame hammer interchange?. Did the 66 ever have a case hardened hammer? Or were all of them Stainless? Thanks...........Bob

Yes, any of the post WWII "short action" K frame hammers will fit.

Only the very earliest product M66 hammers and triggers were ever stainless steel. All subsequent production has been flash chromed carbon steel.

As above, the VERY early Model 66 had true stainless steel hammers and triggers.
S&W wasn't satisfied with how they wore, so they quickly changed to carbon steel with a flash plated coating of hard chrome to match the stainless gun.
Later models had carbon steel with a color case hardened finish then they switched to MIM parts.

What your 66 would have been fitted with depends on the dash version.,
Up to the 66-3 they were plated.
Any hammer from a "K" frame revolver of the generation or "dash" version you have can be used, but note that some fitting may be required.

Here's my 66-3 version.

I dont have it with me right now, but I believe it's a 66-4. It has a pinned black blade front sight post. Is that style factory? or aftermarket?........................Bob

Is your 66-4 a double action only? I have a 3 inch 66-4 with cashardened hammer and trigger and the hammer is bobbed, but mine is double action only.
