Model 66

Howdy folks, I'm new to the site.
I'm looking at buying a model 66 from a friend.
The serial # is 9k11XXX. Could someone give me some info on this bad boy? I'd greatly appreciate it.

I show the serial number you listed as being produced in 1976. The model 66 is the stainless version of the work horse model 19. Unless it has been abused they are great guns. The only caution is S&W does not have all of the parts for these early editions and repairs can get questionable. I just had one repaired and the work estimate stated it was an "obsolete" model although they were able to do what I needed for repairs. I would not hesitate for a moment, he may sell it to someone else.

Thanks for the helpful information! I had no idea the gun was that old as it is in excellent condition. He offered to sell it to me for $350, and I knew that was a great price. Will this old of a model allow +p ammo to run through it as well as .357 and standard .38 ammo?

Great revolver, look at the bottom of the forcing cone(end of the bbl inside the frame)and the frame underneath the bbl. Their only real weakness was in this area, as they would crack if they fired a goodly number of 125 357s.

The gun is tough if it is kept clean and fires 158grain 357s or any 38 Spls. It was engineered before the 125 firebreathin 357s that became popular in the 1970s and 1980s.

I've had one for forty years and it is still perkin along. Very accurate, easy to carry and powerful for most any Self Defense need. They also make great plinkers with 38s.

I have several of those "old" model 66's.....have been shooting them since the early 70's..instructed them for years at the academy level ( had 250 of them in inventory).....they are 357 magnums and will handle any 38 spl load, 38 plus P and factory 357's you want to run thru them.....$350. is an OUTSTANDING price....you should buy it now.

You are quite welcome.....they are great revolvers.....I have a lot of personal history with the 19's/66's....they are among the " best of breed" in my book....enjoy your 66....I do mine.

Go purchase the M66, do not pass go, just run like hell. They don't get much better.

Just do most of your shooting with .38 Specials and when you do shoot .357's on occasion use 158 grain bullets. You will be fine. Before buying it, check the frame by the forcing cone just to make sure there are no cracks in it.
