I want to start shooting SSR and have decided after a lot of reading and talking to revolver shooters I know to try a Model 67. I recently handled but did not shoot a 686SSR and still think I would prefer the 67.

Now that I've looked at what is available, I wonder whether I should try a 67-1 or -2 (I want the red ramp and 'black' rear) or consider a later model 67-5. I haven't paid much attention to S&Ws offerings and didn't even realize until recently that the Model 67 was still being made.

It appears, say, a 67-1 will be a little lighter. I'm not hung up about the lock on a new model. I will reload for it.

Any reason to prefer one over the other?

Any of the 67s are light enough to be IDPA/SSR legal with any normal grip.
Only problem I've seen is the 686 square butts go overweight with the Pachmayr grips--which is one reason the 686 SSR has some weight shaved off the front to make weight for sure.

I can't say about the dash numbers. Any K-Smith with adjustable sights is a fine SSR. A lot of people shoot the fixed sight guns, but I cannot see them as well.

Any 67 or 15 for that matter would be a great IDPA gun. Get a bunch of speedloaders and load SWCs or round nose bullets with a clean powder and you're on your way. Enjoy, make sure and obtain an IDPA approved holster.

I'm embarassed to say that I did not know what a Model 67 is and I had to look it up. It's a nice revolver, and as far as K Frame .38s go its biggest attributes will be the adjustable sights and (somewhat) light barrel. The adjustable sights are always nice since the gun might not be shooting to your eyes or hold (though this has never happened to me with a fixed sight S&W revolver). I like a heavier barrel for a match gun, though some prefer the lighter barrel for quicker transitions. It's certainly not a bad choice. I'd prefer an older model with a hammer mounted firing pin. I also find that red ramp front sights are very difficult to see under many light conditions and that front sight would be the first thing to go. If they still make these with the integral forged front sights, you can grind it off and replace it with a dovetailed front sight, as I did with my Model 66. I prefer fiber optic, but if you are serious about winning IDPA matches you might want to go with tritium for the low light matches.

Thanks for the responses. I've been shooting IDPA for some time and if I replace the red ramp it will probably be with an all-black serrated front site. I tried FO for over two years and decided it's not for me.

I decided against integral sight models though if Gunbroker is any guide there are a lot more of those around than the adjustable sight versions.

Some people I talked to recommended the 686 and another one or two regularly shoot a Model 10. It seems the new Model 67 does have a heavy barrel and I may look at one of those if I can find one locally.

I think the 67 would be a fine SSR gun. I have used a 4" 66 and am happy with it. I would like to get one of the new 686SSRs, like the way they look and feel, but it's hard to justify spending the $ for a gun that is, for all practical purposes, really not all that different from what I already have.

I have both a 67-4 and a -5. The -4 is the last year they were made before the lock and both have the heavy one piece barrel. The -4 did take some looking around to find it. The nice feather of these guns is the pinned front sight which makes it easy to change out the sight to the one you want. I sent both these guns to the factory for the revolver action job and have installed gold bead front sights also use the Wolff power rib main spring with an ISIM reduced rebound spring. Great shooters!!!

I have my 67 setup for SSR and I have to say that I'm very pleased with it.

I shoot a 67 no dash whose front sight has been painted with fluorescent orange acrylic model paint. It works for me. Any of the Model 67's will make an excellent SSR gun for IDPA. Many people prefer the blackckened steeel front and rear sights with or without red ramp front and white outline rear inserts.

Model paint works or I just use my Girlfriends Flourecent orange nail polish.

Try J&G gunsales at J&G Sales they have good deals on Model 67's, I bought a Model 15 that I was happy with, just be advised even though they have the spurred hammer they are DAO.

I ended up with a 67-6. Yes, it has the lock and the 2-piece barrel. The lock isn't really a big deal for me and the info on the web about the 2-piece barrel is all over the map but whatever it's faults may be, inaccuracy doesn't appear to be one of them. As soon as I get the tool head set up on the 550 I hope to start shooting it.

Hi,

The 67s that J&G are selling are excellent buys. Another thought would be a 66. Just the magnum version of the 67. Very accurate and I hear they do well at IDPA in SSR. I am thinking of competing in IDPA SSR too. I am going to use my 66 below.

Good luck,

K-frames may become even more popular if IDPA reduces the PF for SSR. It is now announced as under consideration. Hasn't happened yet, but maybe it will. The 67 is a fine handling wheelie.
