Just picked this up at a LGS, yesterday. Got great deal on it. Nothing mechanically wrong with it. Just stupid gold plating. Grips need some work and front insert is missing. I have gotten most of the gold off, but still work in progress. Pretty sure with new grips and gold gone, it is gonna look great. Been using Just plain friction with rag, some polish and steel wool to remove gold.

Any suggestions on what to do with front insert? The sight is part of barrel.

Also, preliminary search puts the date of 1974. Can someone confirm this? Can the month be detemined?
Serial# 5k786xx.

What is it worth cleaned up?

Also noticed the firing pin spring doesn't seem to be doing much, will that cause any functional problems?
Edit: Found some of these models didn't have the hammer nose spring.

Thanks, Rosewood

Imagine you are using some sort of solvent. You'll likely need to detail strip the revolver. Get some skilled help to take it apart and reassemble so everything is right and undamaged.

When you start shooting it you'll likely despise the rear sight, if it's all shiny SS. A replacement blue blade at a minimum, of the same height as the current one (if it has sufficient adjustment available) will help. A better fix is an all blue S&W sight with the correct blade height and of the proper top hole configuration.

Yeah, shame on whoever trashed the grips. They can be refinished; check on this site for how to do.

Shot it today. I really like this thing. Really nice one hole groups at 10 yards. Gotta stretch it out now. Buddy said they likely cut the grip so a speed loader would fit. I will clean it up smooth out.

I will polish much of the moving parts when I take it apart. Still have some light gold hue in some areas, will take some more elbow grease.

Sights were fine. Rear sight is blued from what i can tell. When aiming don't even notice the gap from the missing insert. It just looks junky from the side.

If you have to use something to clean it, use bronze wool on it and oil. Steel Wool will scratch the metal. I also have a 67 no dash. Enjoy yours! Bob

I used a clean rag by itself, Mother's metal polish, flitz, bronze wool and steel wool. Was trying to find something that worked well. They all worked somewhat, all took elbow grease. I thought the steel wool would scratch, but guess the stainless is harder than the #0000 wool, it didn't leave any noticeable damage to the finish. Believe it or not, some of the gold came out when I rubbed it with my thumb. Not real sure how they got it to stick to the stainless, but some places it was much thinner than others and easier to remove.

The bronze wool does work wonders on a blued finish to remove rust though.

Can anyone answer these 2 questions?

Also, preliminary search puts the date of 1974. Can someone confirm this? Can the month be determined?

I think 1974 is a pretty good guess. As for value, cleaned up w/front sight fixed, $350 around here, maybe $400. Not a great CC gun, or target gun. Great truck or night stand gun with good +P JHP ammo.

Bring it to the Gwinnett Co. fairgrounds this week end and walk it around if you want to sell it.

Sure! For a $100 letter from the Historical Foundation, you can get the exact date and the destination.

I know that, but didn't know if that book I hear others talking about would have the month.

Thanks,

Richard
