Model 6906

Just purchased a used 6906 previously owned by an LEO; S/N RJF1760. Its my first S&W handgun and I'm new to the forum. I've downloaded the Instruction Manual. Can anyone offer any advice or recommendations? Does the S/N convey any useful information re date of manufacture?

You have a great carry/SD gun there, it's a pretty nice range gun too.

I'd suggest trying to pick up some preban 14or 15 round 59** magazines (since you are in CA) to use if you use it for HD or for spares if you have a carry permit.

Hope you stick around this is a great place to learn about your 3rd gen.

I bought one [CPD] from CDNN because i didn't own a 9mm and it was cheap. Barely any holster wear at all. It's a grear shooter, never a stumble with factory or reloads. It now shares time with my Glock as my EDC.

My 6906 is LE trade-in and has a square TG with spurless hammer.
Hammer has grooves on top.
Funny, how the gray anodizing of the frame makes it look like gray plastic.

I picked one up a while back and and they replaced the sights on it but mine shoots about 2 inches low at 16 yards. Would love to find some replacement sights for it.

After the RH de-cocker lever flew off my 5906 at the range (a replacement part is nearly impossible to find,) I modify any new gun I get with this setup. I believe your 6906 has a lever on each side like the 5906.

I remove the RH de-cocker, detent and spring from the gun. I drill out the inside of the de-cocker slightly so the detent sits completely in it. Then I stretch the spring out slightly (or replace it with a longer one) so there's more tension on the detent. Haven't lost another one since.

My 6906 is a re-import, rumor says from Israel but I cannot prove it. Yet. They're great guns. Mine has never hiccupped once yet and I ran a lot of different ammunition through it. Easy to shoot, easy to carry when I want to, definitely an all around great pistol. Enjoy it!!

Just yesterday I posted the question about the age of my 6906. The serial number shows nothing. Fortunately, I have the original box and another forum member got the date of manufacture from the "Spec. Ord." number on the box.
