Model 910 QUALITY QUESTIONS

Are the 910's any good? I know they were a low price S&W, is the quality low as well? Any cost cutting measures to be concerned about, cheap parts, plastic parts, crappy components? I have heard plastic firing pins, plastic guide rods, cheap substitute to 59 series. How do they compare to the 59 series pistols?

Back when the price point was $300 to $350 the 910's were indeed a good value. Yes, there were some plastic parts (the firing pin is not plastic) and less finishing than a 59 series.

For what they were, they were good first pistols or in my case a good cheap pistol to teach new shooters with.

When the price went up they ceased to be a good value, IMO.

When I discovered the 915 with its better build, cheaper price and more inherent accuracy due to tighter lock up, I ceased using a 910.

Faced with a choice between a 59 series and a 910 I would choose the 59 every time.

If I came across a nice 910 for $300 or less I would pick it up as a cheap shooter. Regards 18DAI

The 910 is a pistol well worth owning. I doubt there is a plastic firing pin. I know some parts are plastic, like the mag release nut. It doesn't unscrew like the 3rd Gen guns and is usually replaced once removed.

I do recall that Patric Sweeney in the "Gun Digest Book of Smith & Wesson" said it was one of the most accurate pistols they tested.

The barrel lugs present on the 3rd Gen pistols aren't on the 910 but accuracy doesn't seem to suffer.
