M&P Target 640816 was shipped February 8, 1932.

M&P Target 659118 was shipped December 23, (TODAY!!) 1936.

You can do the math at this point, and it will tell you exactly what math tells you---which may or may not have anything to do with real life---and probably doesn't.

Option #2 is you can get a letter (which will cost you somewhere between $75 and $100 (depending upon your affiliations)) which will tell you exactly when your gun was shipped (most of the time), and will not tell you when it was made (except under unusual circumstances----which are few and far between).

One thing's for sure enough to bet BIG money on: Your gun was NOT made in 1930!!

I forgot something which most people seem to forget--the letter also tells you to whom the gun was shipped (usually to a distributor)-------sometimes to an individual----sometimes to an individual who was SOMEBODY!!! If/when your gun was shipped to SOMEBODY!!!, the letter will say something like "This is a very important revolver." It's a good thing this doesn't happen too often (only happened to me once), because I almost wet my pants----might have actually wet my pants----just a little.

It is impossible to tell when any Smith & Wesson was manufactured. One can only guess as to when it shipped without a complete serial number. A guess can be off 5 or more years.

Given to picking nits as I am, the nit here is "------impossible to tell when ANY Smith & Wesson was manufactured." Now if Don had used a weasel word or two----something like "it is nigh on to impossible"---or "almost impossible"---or "damn near impossible", I'd have kept shut and gone about my business. (I only pick nits part time.)

So anyhow, I had these two single shots. Their numbers were 4807 and 4826. I suspect that many of you might have supposed these two guns were quite possibly completed on the same day---I know I did. Then I made the mistake of asking Dr. Jinks about it. It turned out it wasn't really a mistake, because if I hadn't asked, the good Dr. wouldn't have had the opportunity to give me a little rap on the knuckles----and I wouldn't have had the opportunity to tell you about it-------and I think it's a fairly big deal only because we've had it beaten into our heads since time immemorial that it's like Don said--------"It is impossible to tell when any Smith & Wesson was manufactured."-------except when it isn't.

This turned out to be one of those times when it isn't. (I have no idea how many times when it isn't----only that this isn't one of them.) So--------4807 was "----part of the production run of 31 units completed on May 9, 1911 and entered into the shipping vault on that date."-------and 4826 "-------was in the production run of this model completed on June 21, 1911 and entered into the shipping vault on that same day."

And finally that little rap on the knuckles I told you about: "This certainly establishes that they were not produced in the same production lot of Perfected Single Shot Pistols."

That it does---that it does---it certainly establishes another thing or two also---doesn't it?

38 Spl M&P, Nickel, 6",#296998

According to stamp on toe of grip frame, was refinished at factory 4.48. Matching serial numbers, stocks not numbered. "O" stamped on left side heel of grip frame, on barrel flat, and on rear of cylinder behind the extractor star. Have requested letter and will post all information and pictures (to the best of my limited ability) when received. No ordnance marks, no "Made in U.S. A." Serial on barrel flat preceded by a "B" and followed by the "O".
Thanks, I just can't figure out the year and would dearly love to know when it was shipped. Appreciate the help.

It will be in your best interest to start your own thread. An established thread such as this one is going to attract limited additional traffic----to your detriment.
