Hello again Forum Friends. :)

Two years ago I found an abused model of 1950 Target revolver.
After fitting the model 25-2 cylinder to it and shooting it some I put it away.
Knowing someday I would find a higher purpose for it.

Read here for the details.

http://smith-wessonforum.com/s-w-ha...inally-found-1950-target-abused-but-neat.html

Recently I found a real live 45 Colt Mountain gun barrel from a model 25-13,
a gun with the lock.
I have had a model 25-5 45 Colt cylinder for some time just waiting for
a project, and with the addition of a few small parts I saw a gun in my mind.

SO ,,here it is a 1950 Target, with model 25-5 cylinder from 1980,
and a model 25-13 barrel from 2003.
The extractor star is a 45 cal. post war right hand thread period
correct for the gun.

I fit the barrel to the frame first. Then the cylinder to the frame/barrel.

Endshake is about .006, and b/c gap about .008. all within
acceptable limits for a 45 Colt revolver using a such a low pressure round.

Here are pictures of IT , with an all original 1950 Target I purchased
from a forum member recently, and my Heavy Duty project 45 Colt
with stainless cylinder and barrel.

Note the extractor star still in the white. I was very fortunate to have
found this as it enabled the later cylinder to mate with the early
post war frame and action.

The Heavy Duty project has been fired and shoots to point of aim.

It is just waiting for some type of finish.

I believe I am going to have the whole gun glass bead blasted as it hides a
worlt of small flaws. Then maybe blue the frame leaving the cylinder and barrel
stainless.

Looks AWESOME Allen !
Wondering if your planning to Dremel a slot in the barrel for a barrel set pin ?

S&W needs to build a run of Heritage 4" NON IL .45 caliber blued square butt revolvers and Stainless 4" 45 Mountain Gun .

Gorgeous as always Allen. I think the postwar magnas are the nicest grips Smith produced (except for cokes of course!). Are you planning on installing a pin in the new .45 frame? Bondo maybe?:):):)

A guy could get the impression that you're a fan of the 45 Colt, if he weren't carful. :)

Though I do thake it to mean that your enshake is .006 with a cylinder gap of .008. Them pesky extra zeros can make a difference.

Very nice!

My 5" M-58

Great project guns. Purist's might scoff at rebuilding and changing guns from original, however the only way to have a special weapon is to either do it yourself or pay someone to do it. As opposed to the old days ( pre 1968 anyway) when a customer could deal directly with Colt or S&W and order little specialties. Out of the 14 post war N frames I own, only 4 are as original.

Nice work, Allen! If the company didn't, can't or won't build the gun you want, you just have to build it your own dang self! Good for you.

I like the concept of the refinished blue and stainless combination. go for it.

I applaud your efforts, I can see no harm in doing what you did. As was mentioned you got what the factory can no longer do your own way...my hats off, thank you for pictures. Its an encouragement to those of us that think outside the box.

How cool is that? Nice work Allen. Go for the pinto look that would be really neat.

Alan,

I love your projects! Especially the authentic RH extractor. If you decide against the pinto look, George Rogarr can blue the barrel and cylinder to match the blue gun. I have his contact info if needed.

I have the same challenge converting a 586 into a 596 (44 Spl) with a 696 SS cylinder.

One little detail I added to my barrel and you may have already considered, was the little taper on the right side of the barrel shroud (shown here on a TL) so indicative of the pre war and 1950's guns. Those early guns sure had the panache.
