"Modern" smith and wesson matte blueing

I've heard that the newer matte blueing like what is on the 586 L comp will be damaged by using hoppes 9. How durable is the finish on a 586 or similar gun then?

It has been reported in numerous places that the old formula of Hoppe's #9 could damage the bluing. Hoppe's formula changed nearly 20 years ago due to the EPA. The new formula shouldn't cause any harm to the finish.
