" Molted" case colors

Has anyone ever heard or used the phrase " molted" to describe
fading or oxidation of case colored parts on a revolver. The color
of the part becomes less vivid. Mike 2796

"Muted", as in "toned-down" or "faded". But not "molted".

The word is "Mottled": "A surface having colored spots or blotches"

After case hardening, Turnbull sprays on a coat of lacquer to preserve the colors. Just as Colt did over 150 years ago. A lacquer coat on worn colors will improve their vibrancy w/o affecting the CCH whatsoever.

Thanks all. I overheard the word used by a dealer Sunday at the Pompano Show. I all ways used "faded" or "less vivid". Now, I have the the correct term. Mike 2796

CCH is mottled even when brand new, meaning blotchy, spotty, marbled, or dappled, or when faded and less vivid.
