Hello all,

The moon clips that came with my 627 are pretty tuff to use without a tool. I am researching others to buy and Speed Beez says, and shows in a vid, their clips looking very easy to load and unload.
So, question is.... Have any of you found a brand that easier to load /unload?

The best answer is to acquire a proper clip loading/unloading tool.
All these revolver clips are very thin as compared to ACP moons.
For my 327, I use only the thickest (.025") moons with brass they fit.
I use mine for competition. If yours is a range toy only, then the plastic clips may suffice.

My $0.03, YMMV

I hear ya. My hopes were up though after watching the Speed Beez vid of the guy just using his hands easily attaching and removing rounds with their clips. I need to order anyway so maybe I'll give 'em a shot and worst case I am still using a tool.
Thanks.

The best clips are TK Custom used with a BMT moonclip tool. You may save a few bucks going another route, but this is the easiest and best way, especially for a 627.

Great info Pizza Bob. Unfortuetly I ordered from Speed Beez a couple of hours ago and they are not listed on the chart so it will be an experiment. However, if they don't work out, I will be consulting the chart. What I have right now to work with the stock clips is fed 38 special and it looks like the chart confirms that it's a pain in the backside for this ammo with these current clips.
Thanks for the info.

The trick to is to find the best clip headstamp combo. Often this had to be done by trial & error, but I stumbled over this great chart on BMT's website:

Saves a lot of time and heartache. Thanks BMT.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

I doubt that SpeedBeez is making their own clips (could be wrong). Probably Revolver Supply or Ranch.

I just bought a 627-5PC and started looking for clips - of course I have 3K pieces of PMC brass which only seems to work with TK's clips @ $7 each. Visiting my gun guy tomorrow and will try some combos (he is a Revolver GM - so has various pieces on hand).

FWIW....
After looking at the chart you provided I see Ranch Products clips work well with almost all ammo. So I did a quick search and found this site selling Ranch clips at a great price(half of speedbeez)

Moon Clip - S&W 627 - .38 Special

I bought a bunch of the ranch moon clips for my 627 and they work just fine. I don't worry about rapid reloads. I shoot bowling pin matches with it and if you can't clear 6 pins with 6 rounds a quick reload just means you lost.
A 6" pair of channellock pliers snaps the rounds in just fine and that $3 U shaped extractor tool pops them out.

I've always found the Ranch Products clips to be the most consistent quality-wise and have never had issues with them bending or otherwise tying the guns up.

I don't have the discipline to sort my brass by head stamp. (Perhaps if I shot in competition I would.) I use the ranch product clips, tool and arbors from these folks in all my moon clip using S&W revolvers ( including my 627pc)with good results. MOONCLIPTOOL - Home
Lots of prior prior discussion on this topic here if you search.

I have a 627 as well and use moon clips from Revolver Supply, TK and Smith & Wesson (these are also made by TK). All are .025" and I use a piece of cut-down copper pipe for demooning and the Jerry Miculek special for mooning, in other words small pliers... I am faster with that than the BT mooner... So it doesn't have to cost much, or anything for that matter....

If TK is too steep for you Revolver Supply and Remington brass make a great combination. IMHO on par with TK and Star Line.

BMT mooner is the best moon/de-moon tool I have ever used for rimmed cartridges and moonclips.

If I can put the cartridges on or off the moonclip easily without a tool then I don't want combination of case and moonclip. I want my cartridges firmly held so they don't fall out during use and handling. A proper fitting moonclips allows minimal movement cartridge in the clip keeping the cartridges separated for smoothly dropping them into the cylinder.
