Moon Clips

I have two revolvers that use moon clips. I have a 610 10MM and a 625 .45 ACP. I have a dislike for steel moon clips, they are a real PIA to load the separate rounds into. I know there are plastic moon clips made. Has anybody used them and do they hold up well?

There are plastic ones called "Rimz", I have never used them. They apparently are easy to load and unload, don't know about longevity.

I have a lot of different steel ones and they are easy to load and unload with the right tools.

I have a home made tool for removing the cases from the moon clips. Works well.

Don't think I have ever seen a tool for loading a moon clip.

I have used Rimz. The problem I have found is that they are very specific and I have some .45ACP revolvers that they work with just fine and others that they do not work with worth a darn. I finally broke down and got one of the loading-unloading tools from BMT. Works like a charm but is NOT cheap.

A loading tool makes the pain go away! I load 6 different clips on one tool This is my tool from the original designer, but they are sold by TK Customs today! All the unloaders are home made.

Change the mandrel to use on different full moon clips/calibers! I like full moon clip guns!

I have rims and steel moonclips.

I only use the steel clips for competitions and occasionally use the rimz when at a static range- especially when I’m testing a reload.

Key is getting the proper tools. I’ve had good luck with this vendor-

I use the Rimz on my six 25–8. They work great. Originally bought the thicker ones and the load and unload is easy enough with just your fingers. Be careful not to twist when you pull the rounds out. The plastic will eventually split though, but they’ll still work.
I accidentally bought the thin ones the second time around. They load easy but the rounds practically fall out on their own.

I use the Rimz for my 646 and M-25. They work great, never had a problem. Easy to load and unload - no tools or pain required.

I have used Rimz in my 625.. but bench range day only... I use steel for competition that requires movement.. the Rimz make bench shooting easy

Go to TKCustom.com. He sells the right moons for the cases you are using and has the tools to extract the empties.

I like the TK customs moon clips and I also have found the Speed Beez moon clips work great on the 625.

Both can be loaded by hand.

There are three different unloaders in this picture. My preference are the tubular unloaders and you can make them with suitable diameter steel tubing and a hack saw or grinder. If you have a lathe or access to someone with a lathe you can knurl the handle end in no time and make it look pretty as well as easier to use.

He asked to help, told him I only had the one tool. He disappeared into my shop and came back with my large water pump pliers and started popping the cartridges in, two at a time.

This one I made out of a copper pipe and a wooden handle for a file I had laying around. Helps to keep stuff (wife says I am a packrat). Works for me.

We called these Cannon Plug pliers when I was an electrician on aircraft. Will have to try them out. Padded jaws may be good!

BMT

I shoot five different 45acp revolvers using moonclips almost exclusively. The BMT tool is the best one for loading and uploading the clips. It is pricey, but after you use it you'll soon forget about the price. I've been using the same clips for years. Never had one bend. Never cut a finger.

I just use a pair of pliers to load them....no need to buy anything, already had them. Works extremely well for me!

They is a RIMZ clip available for the S&W Model 625. It is of a thinner (?) polymer and they describe it as “for range use only”. I believe others have modified the heavier RIMZ to fit the S&W Model 625. I use steel clips so can only offer heresay evidence.

I have used both the steel and the plastic (Rimz) full moon clips for model 1917/1937 revolvers for years. I prefer the Rimz clips as they are easy to load and unload without tools. There are several different models, however, so you need to ask for the clips by revolver model, as the ones for 1917s will not always work in model 25s.
By the way, in years past I have had some failures to fire while using the steel clips, as they can “cushion” the hammer fall if they are bent slightly.
