If it's on layaway, you still have time to change your mind then I assume. I'm not saying that gun is a bad choice, but you will learn more about specific variations on here and might realize you can have a 686 variation that you would actually prefer more and pay a far less price. Used guns to me are great if you plan to shoot the gun anyway, it's not like under normal conditions you're going to wear the gun out, and the value is typically less on used guns (unless you get into highly sought after collector guns). This forum will provide a wealth of information and you might get more information/opinions than you want, but take the information that is useful to you and make the most informed decision you can. A newer S&W with a lock is not a horrible thing, I doubt it will ever give you any problems at all.....however, if you could have a gun w/o it, along with forged parts (MIM parts really aren't a horrible thing either) all for a cheaper price that might be something to consider. To me the lock just looks a bit awkward and I feel that it will affect the long term value of my revolvers, and since my revolvers are not only used for protection/fun......I consider them an investment as well. In many cases I have purchased older used wheel guns with out the lock and w/o MIM parts much cheaper, and today these guns have appreciated in value more so than had I purchased a gun new and never fired it. Just some food for thought, either way you will love than gun and it will serve you well for years to come.
