Another increase in postal rates also coming soon.

Nothing new. Mail theft happens here even from mailboxes located outside post offices. No one would dare put outgoing mail in the street boxes in front of their houses. For years we take our outgoing mail for deposit inside the post office. We are not far from one.

Had a lot of breakins here. We have those mailboxes that are for multiple residences on street. Mail carrier loads mail from the back which made the thief somewhat concealed from view when breaking into the box.

New boxes were put in that load from the front. So far so good but probably not perfect. Just break in at night. Neighborhood patrols have become almost nonexistent in the past year.

Retired from USPS in 2014. We had a rash of people not breaking into the collection boxes, but rather taking the whole thing. There's really not a whole lot anchoring them down. Usually 4 bolts in a cement pad.

yes theft has always happened but it seems to be much more common now.
it's just a sad commentary on the state of our society that dirtbags do things like this. it's a federal offense and they deserve a max penalty instead of a slap on the wrist if they're caught.
