I have a model 36 with a serial number 2J77XX. I believe it is a "Chief Special". It has a round butt? Is a .38 special, hand ejector. Can anyone tell me when it was made?

Your M36 has what is sometimes referred to as the "floating J" serial number. In other words, the serial numbers started with J1..., then 1J..., then 2J..., etc. That range of serial numbers went from 1J1-999J99 in 1971-1972. That would be the time period when your gun was made.

kscharlie has it right. In actuality, the factory appears to have started assigning the "floating J" numbers sometime in 1970. The one you have very likely shipped from the factory in 1971. It would take an SWHF letter to know for certain.

Thanks, the 2J was throwing me off in my researching. I bought the gun from a friend who's father used it while a reserve police officer about that time.

...I own J86xxx...

...I have been of the belief that it's from 1970...
