Morel mushroom season is about over here in Virginia but I feel fortunate enough to have picked about 4lbs including my wife and daughters. My wife and I ran to the dumpster one morning while at the camp and I happened to spot a morel along the road while driving there. I picked 14 in that spot in the morning. Later that evening my wife and I picked 9 more in the same spot. Other then these most were black and grey mountain morels. How have you all shroom hunters faired this year.

Here’s our most recent bunch.

We decided to do some mushroom hunting today. Great way to get out of the house while still following the social distancing rules for quarantine. We didn't have as much luck as you did but we found enough for dinner. We roll ours in a mixture of flour and corn meal. How do you fix yours? We really enjoy "dry land fish" hunting as we call it here in here in Eastern Kentucky.

Here in the Interior of Alaska we have morels as a June or July crop and almost exclusively in areas which had a forest fire the prior year. They are about thumb size and very flavorful. Easy to dry and keep also. I would like some like we had in Indiana as I grew up.

Normally I just add salt and pepper to my flour and fry them in butter and oil mix. A box of jiffy mix cornbread mix with the shrooms dipped in the batter is excellent also.
We call them dry land fish here also. And it is a great way to spend time with the family.
Doesn’t hurt when you come back to the camp and find a couple nice trout on a stringer in the creek. Thanks to my nephew. Nothing better then fresh trout and shrooms dinner!!!

The weather has been crazy. The largest white morel I found had snow on top of it. It would have been a pretty picture.

Here in cornfields and cows country, except for a few days, it has been 30 plus degrees below average for weeks, so no mushrooms yet. It's too cold to enjoy doing anything outside.

I have only found about 6 this season in Ohio.

I did find probably over 100 “half free” morels, still edible but I am not that big of a fan of their texture.

That sounds great! Fresh trout is always a treat. Turkey season is coming in here this weekend. We're hoping for some turkey to go with our mushrooms!

Turkeys and I have a love/hate relationship. When it comes to turkey hunting I have no luck. But a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while, so I’m gonna try after I get off my 4 day shift.
I had one gobbling it’s head off last week at the camp. The wife and kids got a kick out of me messing with him with my gobble call. The day before we watched a nice Tom out in the field strutting for the ladies. A first for my girls to see and hear.

I’ve killed them in the fall with everything from a pistol to a muzzleloader but maybe next week will be my week to break the ice on a spring gobbler. Murphy and his law just needs to go hang out with some one else this weekend.

Pro Tip Dad Taught me. If you don't know, that a picture or bring one in to local community or state college. Those folks know it. Not my generation, but to some in my family, knowing this back in the day was essential knowledge. The bottom line is, any free time was spent on doing things that would help the family. That may be fishing, hunting, trapping, foraging, you name it.

Morel Mushrooms

I have found 60 so far this year in Ohio. Big yellows aren’t up yet around me. Blacks and grays and on the small side also. I just roll mine in flour and fry in real butter. Delicious I read somewhere that ground temps have to be 55 degrees and when it gets above 62 degrees they are done

Going out Sunday since I can’t go to church

Take care and stay safe

Kelly

Morel season here in Lower Michigan generally figures to center around Mother's Day. On the other hand, they are where and when you find them.
Yes, shake in a big with a little flour, and butter fry them. Don't forget to cut in half and soak in a pan with salt water Toss water in yard, not drain. You might get more one day.
