I have a Mossberg 500AT 12 G. with standard 5 round magazine.
Acquired a 26" VR barrel, cut it down to 19.5" (left me the front bead hole) and put a tritium bead in that hole and all was well.
Groups with #4 Buck were all in a fist-plus size group at 75 feet (the longest distance inside my home at the time) VERY acceptable to me.
All I can find for #4 Buck now are the "Shortys" and they seem to cycle through the action fine (Haven't actually FIRED any as my Mom passed away recently which was where my shooting was done.)
Anyway, I loaded the magazine with 9, and when cycling them through, the first one in the tube seems to be stuck all of the rest cycle without a problem, (again without actually firing- I know, I know- "It's Maine-Just go shoot it but I currently live in Portland, and that would bring the SWAT team at the least.)
My thought is to remove the barrel and get a dowel the same size as the Magazine Plug that it uses, but longer, and try to push against the front of the shell to force it out (while making sure the "retainer" is out of the way.)
I didn't put in the "adapter" to run the shorter shells but as I said, in "dry fire" they seem to function as normal.
My thought is, once I get that round out, a new magazine spring to start, (Bought this Brand New well over 40 years ago and not shot more than 500 rounds-Mostly kept loaded as an HD gun) and possibly to keep a 2/34" round as first in the mag to keep more pressure on the spring.
Thoughts and input welcome.

Use the adapter. Short shells won’t run reliably without it.

The only one I’m aware of is the Opsol Mini Clip.

It only allows the use of 1.75 inch mini shells.

And it works quite well.
Defender Tactical makes a better one that works with any shell, and doesn't fall out.

After 40 years the mag tube spring has probably lost some of it's "spring", especially if it's been loaded most of the time. Love those shorty buckshot rounds.

I have the OPSOL in a Maverick 88 and have used it in Mossberg 500. Never had any issues with it falling out. But in a self defense scenario I’m not relying on a chunk of rubber. It’s just for fun. The Defender adapter looks interesting though.
