Has anyone done any chrony work on different brands of factory .38spl 158gr fmj. I've heard the Geco may be strong, and I've been wondering about the Speer Lawman +P. I'd appreciate any serious input, thanx .

We did quite a bit of chrono on .38s about the time IDPA dropped the power factor requirement so the common commercial non +P .38 loads would pass.
I don't have the list in front of me, but I recall that the Speer +P were among the top for US commercial ammo. We did not test Geco or any of the boutique brands. None of the non +P passed the old standard.

Just curious here...but do you have to use FMJ ammo for SD?If you're being forced to,I understand but if not,IMO that's about the worst choice whatever the FPS attainable in a .38Spl!

I used that Speer +P 158 before IDPA changed the rules. It was ~135pf out of my 3" M66 which was around 850fps.

It's slow but.....

It DOES penetrate to the required depth, and I trust Speer when it comes to terminal performance.

A great many people use 158 gr SWCs and even HPSWCs, which I think is pretty cool considering the cost of cast vs. the cost of jacketed. I've never tested in a real live situation.

Personally I admit using a lighter bullet to gain some velocity. The 'short barrel' 135 gr Speer makes seem to satisfy all of my (theoretical) requirements, i.e. what I THINK it will do what I need when I need it.
