Seen on the clapboards on the back of the house today.
Moths are a whole field of science and study. There are far more questions about the moths in our world than answers. Overall, little to very little is known about most moths, and right here in the USA there are likely many species of them that are not yet known to us. Why? Because they come out at night, and that makes them really difficult to study.
I love this time of year in New England!
But these 3 I've seen before, unfortunately I can't help you with the names of 2.

Put this one on a lichen-covered rock and watch it vanish.

This one is about 2 1/2 inches across.

This one I actually do know, its a Rosy Maple Moth (Dryocampa rubicunda), pretty common for a few weeks every spring.

about 2 or 3 days ago the whole front of our house was covered with little brown moths and I think that they are the result of bagworms.
ogilvyspecial, thank you for that picture. My wife have seen that kind of moth around here for the last couple of years and always wondered what the heck they were. I showed her your picture and you solved our mystery. They do fly like a humming bird for sure.

I took my wife with me on a short 2 or 3 day dive in a truck. I'm glad she saw this, or she would think I was exaggerating. It was well after dark in Norther IN and I hit this big honkin' moth about the size of a bat, at 65mph. Eggs went flying and it would try flapping its wings every so often. I grabbed a flashlight to look at it closer and its EYES GLOWED RED!! After cruising along for a few hours with Flappy leading the way, I pulled over to take a leak or something, and Flappy FLEW AWAY!

One of the guys found a big silkworm moth today. I would post a link to piccy but I cannot remember the species.

You have a real Mothra when a Black Witch Moth visits your house. Next time I'm on my other computer I'll post a picture of the one that turned up in Las Vegas at ma-in-laws.

As promised, a Black Witch that got blown into Vegas from the Tropics. The wind is howling from the South today, so maybe I'll see another.
