How do I set up a motion detector which will trigger an alarm and call my telephone if someone tried to break into or steel my safe?

My thought is that it would be attached to the safe and in radio communication with a unit in another part of the house. If the unit on the safe was moved or destroyed, the other unit would sound an alarm and call my cell phone.

For not too much money you can buy a motion activated light switch. That could be rigged to sound an alarm.

I would want something that will only trigger if someone was messing with the safe.

I am not a techie, but it seems a mercury switch would trip if the safe were moved and that switch could activate something that would notify you.

What you are trying to do is not that simple. You will need either a dry contact on the door or a motion sensor that covers the safe. You will also need an automatic dialer that calls you if that sensor is activated. It can be wireless or plugged into a telephone outlet.

If you go the wireless route you will have a cell phone charge as it is basically the same thing as your cell phone.

I have one of these as my DIY home alarm. The dialer is connected to the land-line, and if that's cut, so much for the dialer.... But I live in a well developed subdivision with neighbors all around, stay at home moms (&dads), kids all over the place, delivery trucks, etc., so the siren would still sound.

Looks like it's going for about $120 on Amazon. Maybe more than you wanted to spend, but just a suggestion.
