Thanks for the info, that's nice to know and it's older then I thought. I'm guessing the original grips are Hogue synthetics. They are a black rubber that hurts my hand.
The original owner bought it in 2005. He fired 6 shots of .44 magnum out of it, cleaned it and put it in the safe. He thought the recoil was brutal, and never shot it again. After a few years he put it up for sale in a friend's shop on consignment. I picked it up for $299. I had the same complaint with the grips when I bought it, they hurt my hand.
When I tried the S&W presentation grips it became a joy to shoot. Of all my S&W guns, and I have some old ones, this one usually accompanies me quite often.
Now I'm wondering about the 4 screws. As SLT223 mentioned I've only seen 4 screws on square butt frames.
